因为问题中是are，复数，postman是集体名词，可以代表一个同性质的群体。
当然如果问题中是is，回答是is，但这里情况不同。
可以用these取代the在没有特别指示时。
Are these 是可以的，但不能说are they/them policemen，但可以说are they short or tall, them 是宾语，不可放在主语位置，例postman deliever letters to me, I collect them.

语法是不对的，应该是复数作主语are the postmen cold or hot ?
