Candy Wang 506098409@qq.com

Mapping Out College Life
Afteryou finish cramming for thecollege entrance exams, maybe you feel it`stime to sit back and relax a while. But wait a moment. Pull yourselftogether and try making some plans forcollege first!
Freshman year: Take a look at yourself
Itis the prefect time to do aquick evaluation before you really doanything. So it is better to list yourstrong and weak points and thinkof areas you want to work on or improve. For instance, you can get areal picture of your leadership, communication, and independent thinkingskills.
Set goals that you really want. “Theydon`t have to be sospecific, like entering a certain company, because yourideas may changeover time. Just give yourself some direction,” is the advice ofSuHuiying, director of recruitment and resourcing at KPMG China, anaccounting firm.
According to Su, one major thing is toformgood habits in your study and in handling things. “It`s important tolearnto be a careful, trust worthy person,” she points out.
Also, freshman year is the time to getto know classmates, professors andadvisors. Try to build up and strenghtenties with them in thebeginning. Believe it or not, they can have a biginfluence on thefuture.
Finally, join student clubsand organizations that giveyou the opportunity to practice teamwork.Find interesting electivecourses.
Sophomore year: Consider a minor
Always keep your grades up, becausethey will be the focus of teachers or employers. Consider adding a minor now.
Joinextracurricular activities on campusasmuch as you can, or do somecommunity work. Look for part-time or summerjobs inyour field ofinterst. If you like journalism, it`s the perfect time to tryworkingfor a local paper or TV station.
More important: try to get aleadership position in a college club or organization.
Englishskills have to be formed early.Especially if you have plans to goabroad or to continue on to grad school, trytaking English tests suchas TOEFL, or IELTS, as early as possible.
Junior year: Think about specializing
Continueto expand your interests, and thinkabout the true area you want toengage in, in the future. Go on to doan internship and seek aleadership position in your clubs in your spare time.
For jobseekers, pay a visit toyour university`s career counceling center foradvice on your future. It`s nottoo early to make a first draft of aresume.
Attend job fairs to get a first feelforthem. Start developing interview skills. Start thinking about an interview ward robe.
Forstudy abroad, complete your tests like GMAT or GRE as soon as possible. You need to thinkabout references and recommendation letters. Try tofind influential orrespected people who will speak highly of you. Thatearly networking pays offnow. Also, start working on your applicationsand required papers.
But if you`re going to grad school, it`stheright time to select universities and prepare for tests. Chen Dasheng, aseniorat Sun Yat-sen University, kindly advises students not to delayall theheavy workload until the last year. “In fact, I wish I`d startedpreparing ayear ago, because there are too many distractions now. Andyour competitorsare already getting ahead.”
Senion year: Polish your resume
It`s time to develop a good thesis towrap up your academic achievements. This matters a great deal.
Accordingto Sun Mei, jobseekers needto polish that resume by this time. Theyneed to finalize interviewpreparations. Think of clever response todifficult questions and practice yourfluency. Find some good personalstories or anecdotes to impress the interviewer.
List all thecompanies, even dozens ofthem, that you`d like to work for. Getinformation from their websites orthroughfriends or teachers. Taakepart in campus interviews.
Fan Qiaoyi, 22, who works forDeloitte, oneof the world`s top four accounting firms, did all of this.“All your hardworkand efforts go to just a crucial few minutes,” shesays. “You need tooutshine everyone else.”
For study abroad, youneed to sendyour materials to the ideal grad school on time, then waitpatiently for aresponse. Even good news may come late.
There`s noshort cut to academicor employment success. Plan diligently for thefour years and you`ll berewarded. And you`ll enjoy school.
