Many of the now well-established professions started life as semi-professions and have since graduated along the continuum to take on more of the characteristics of the profession.In the early nineteenth century there was a very narrow knowledge base to even medicine.At the end of the century the same applied to accountancy.They too have grown into a more professional mould.Internal audit is still farther back along this path,but is travelling comparatively faster than did,for example,accountancy.
