A sedentary lifestyle plays a significant role in obesity.Worldwide there has been a large shift towards less physically demanding work,and currently at least 60% of the world's population gets insufficient exercise.This is primarily due to increasing use of mechanized transportation and a greater prevalence of labor-saving technology in the home.

Excessive weight can result in many serious, potentially life-threatening health problems, including hypertension, Type II diabetes mellitus (non-insulin dependent diabetes), increased risk for coronary disease, increased unexplained heart attack, hyperlipidemia, infertility, and a higher prevalence of colon, prostate, endometrial, and, possibly, breast cancer. Approximately 300, 000 deaths a year are attributed to obesity,
