人民广场是上海最大的公共广场，是融文化、绿化、美化为一体跨世纪的政治文化中心。
广场的中央是320平方米的圆形喷水池，为三层9级下沉式。这是国内首创的大型音乐旱喷泉，红、黄、蓝三色玻璃台阶组成彩色光环，创造出美丽壮观，富有吸引力的新景观。喷水池中央凸现上海的版图，喷水池四周是4座紫铜花坛，用花钢石制成的44只石鼓灯，"蹲"在中心广场上。在四个入口台阶上，6组富有传统文化艺术特色的浮雕，线条生动优美，图案古朴雅致，反映了上海的历史文化及上海人民的美好心愿。
中心广场的东西两侧有两个小广场，东面为旭日廊，形成旭日广场；西面为明月廊，形成明月广场。整个广场均是绿茵茵的草地，众多的树木，大大小小的花坛里鲜花盛开。绿化带主要种植香樟、雪松、白玉兰及其他常绿灌木，郁郁葱葱的，像在人民广场外围拉起了长青的"手"。13公顷面积的广场，仅绿化就占了8公顷，使广场成为上海最大的园林广场
