normally a waiter will not ask a customer whether he wants to eat dinner or a la carte. he simply gives the customer a menu and wait.
when the dish ordered can be a dinner or a "a-la-carte" item, then he should ask "is that for dinner or a la carte"? for many people can be on a diet in usa.
we don't ask "would you like to eat dinner or a la carte"? [that is the chinese expression].
