The Scholarship Jacket
background:B, Martha:M, Grandpa:G, History teacher:H好, Math teacher:A坏，Principal:P.
B:Martha is a girl aged 14,this year she is in the eighth grade.Martha’s father is a
farm laborer [劳动者]who couldn’t earn enough money to feed all children ,so he sent Martha to the grandfather to raise when she was 6.
Martha ‘s school has a tradition ,every year during the eighth grade graduation .A beautiful gold and green jacket is awarded to the class valedictorian[致告别词的毕业生],the student who had maintained the highest grades for 8 years .
Martha had been a straight A student since the first grade ,she was so looking forward to owning the jacket. So that she can participate in sports at school .
B2:One day in May ,Martha happened to see two teachers were quarreling in the
classroom. One is history teacher ,the other is math teacher.
Quarrel:
H:I refuse to do it! I don’t care who her father is, her grades don’t even begin to
compare to Martha’s. I won’t lie or falsify[窜改] records. Martha has a straight A plus average and you know it.
A:Look , Joann’s father is not only on the Board , he owns the only store in town; we
could say it was a close tie and----Martha is Mexican…
B:The second day ,the principal calls Martha to his office, he looked uncomfortable
and unhappy.

P:Martha,there’s been a change in policy[政策] this year regarding the scholarship
jacket .As you know ,it has always been free.
{Clear throat,犹豫纠结}
This year the Board decided to charge 15 dollars---which still won’t cover the

complete cost of the jacket. {玛莎stare,沮丧，哽咽}
P:So if you are unable to pay the 15 dollars for the jacket , it will be given to the next
one in line.
M:I’ll speak to my grandfather about it ,sir, and let you know tomorrow.
{玛莎哭泣}
B:Martha is so sad ,she cried on the way home.

Talk1with grandpa: M:Where’s the grandpa?
Grandma:I think he’s out back working in the bean field. B:Grandpa is watering, Martha come close with hensitation.

M:Grandpa, I have a big favor to ask you. G:Say it….
M:Grandpa,this year the principal said the scholarship jacket is not going to be free.
It’s going to cost 15 dollars and I have to take the money in tomorrow, otherwise, it will be given to someone else. {祖父严肃地说}
G：What does a scholarship jacket mean?
M:It means you have earned it by having the highest grades for 8 years and that’s why they’re giving it to you .
{祖父点头不说话，继续锄草}
B:The grandfather goes back to hoeing the weeds with no words.
{一会儿，祖父又转过头说话}
G:Then if you pay for it ,Martha , it’s not a scholarship jacket ,is it ? Tell your
principal I will not pay the 15 dollars.
B:Martha knows his father is wright, but she is unhappy.
M:Oh,my god ! Why did they have to change the rules just when it was my turn to

win the jacket? {玛莎伤心}
Talk2withP: M:Goodmoring,teacher.
P:moring ,Martha. What did your grandfather say? M:He said to tell you he won’t pay the 15 dollars.
P:Why? Your grandfather has the money. Doesn’t he own a small bean farm?
{注视校长}
M:He said if I had to pay for it ,then it wouldn’t be a scholarship jacket.
{玛莎忍住泪水出去}
P：Martha ,-------Wait. Come back and sit down .
Ok, damn it . We will make an exception in your case .I’ll tell the Board . You get the jacket! {玛莎惊讶，高兴}
M:Oh,thank you ,thank you ,sir.

B:Martha has a good mood again, she smiles happily .At the end of the day she
meets his history teacher.
M:Oh,my dear teacher! H:Oh,Martha ,I hear you’re getting a scholarship jacket this year.

M:Thank you.
