Before 1883, most cities in the United States had their own time. They set their time by the sun. This made many problems for the railroad companies. Their trains went to more than 300 different cities. Every city had a different time. In 1883 Willia Allan made a plan to divide the United States into four different parts called time zones. This made things easier for the railroad companies. Now every city in the same time zone has the same time. The map shows the time zones.
