would rahter应该说是表示一种选择。 would rather 后面一般加现在不带to 的动词不定式， 比如 He would rather go by car. 他宁可坐汽车。 如果是加现在完成时则表示过去的选择 比如 If I'd lived in 1400, I'd rather have been a knight than a monk. 如果我生活在1400年，我宁愿当骑士，不当修道士。
也就是说，我觉的你写的例句是正确的，就是表示想做但没有做，或者说现在觉的当时应该做。

1．一般过去时表示现在或将来的愿望
i would rather you went tomorrow (now). 我宁愿你明天(现在)去。
2. 用过去完成时表过去的愿望
i would rather you hadn’t said it. 我真希望你没有这样说过。
