 Mona Lisa speaks


Leonardo Da Vinci's famous portrait of the Mona Lisa has a mysterious smile. It will always remain a mystery, but it is possible to hear what her voice would have sounded like, thanks to a Japanese sound expert.

Dr Matsumi Suzuki generally uses his skills to help with criminal investigations (调查). But now he and his team are trying to create the voice of Mona Lisa.

They have measured the face and hands in the picture and estimated (估算) her height. They have created a model of her skull (头骨). "Once we have that, we can create a voice similar to that person," Suzuki said.

Free TV for Indians
 
THE government of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu said last week that it would give free colour television sets to tens of thousands of poor people.

New state chief minister M Karunanidhi said the 14-inch (35-cm) TV sets would be sent out from mid-September to people living below the poverty line.

The 83-year-old leader made the promise in the run-up (竞选过程) to local elections this month. He also promised rice at 2 rupees (about 0.32 yuan) per kilogram for the poor.

About 30 per cent of India's more than 1 billion people live below the poverty line
