In the early 1950s , I was a grad student at the University of Chicago , considered one of the best in the world , and , to complicate things , I was blind . So we understand clearly , by blind I mean that I could see sunlight . Moreover , none of the material for studying abstract mathematics was in Braille , and no society existed for recording material . I did find a group who put some things into Braille , although we had to invent the notation because Nemeth code , for example , had not yet been contemplated .

After receiving my masters degree , I went on to receive my PhD at the University of Illinois and , in the process , began my study of computer programming . This study led me to apply to the Argonne National Laboratory in 1957 , and I am still there . I was given the job of consultant – to figure out how mathematics could enable scientists to get assistance from a computer . What a marvelous opportunity – and it eventually led me to my current career .

I invent strategies that enable a computer to solve problems that require deep reasoning. Yes, there do exist computer programs that reason, and reason logically . Such programs prove theorems from mathematics, design circuits, and prove that some computer programs do correctly what they are intended to do – but not nearly so well as scientists would like . My job is to find ways to make automated reasoning programs more powerful.

At this point you might be skeptical that a computer program can reason. If so , you might read “Automated Reasoning : Introduction and Applications” or “Automated Reasoning : 33 Basic Research Problems.” I wrote the first book with my colleagues and the second book alone. I get great pleasure from being an author , especially since readers say they enjoy the books and learn from them .

Now if you were hoping for a stronger motivation for why mathematics and computer science is so exciting, here it is. Much of problem solving that succeeds requires careful, meticulous, logical reasoning. If we can design a general-purpose computer program that reasons as effectively as the better mathematicians, then the importance will be immeasurable. And that is my goal: to develop a program that draws 10,000 conclusions a second, that runs on parallel processing computers, that self-analytically determines how to change its attack on a problem, and that can assist in finding and correcting mistakes.

Blindness is a handicap, just as having a poor memory is. Certainly if I could see the pins, I would bowl far better, but a 140 average isn’t too bad. I have a great wife, many friends, and wildly exciting career.
