1. Please provide a statement outlining your immediate educational and long-range career objectives in relation to your chosen field. If there is a particular faculty member with whom you wish to study, please give that person's name and explain why you want to study with that person. You may also wish to include other information, such as any undergraduate research experience, internships, or other experiences you may have had to document your preparation for advanced study in your chosen field.

As my grandma’s sister is a successful accountant I admire, I began to get interested in accounting work quite early. I found that a great accountant is more like a musician who perfectly applies balance into the changes of notes. He/she knows how to arrange the company in the most economic way and distributes information and resources with absolute accuracy which appears professional and elegant—the biggest charm accounting fascinates me.

My preparation for studying in US started from Grade 6, attracted by the unique teaching approach. By consistent hard work, I have remained one of the top students in our grade ever since. In the third year of high school, I was given the chance to be recommended to Beijing Foreign Studies University without taking the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE). However, in order to go to study in US, I rejected the offer and made every effort to prepare for the TOEFL and SAT (NCEE at the same time, in case that my application might fail). Finally, the three months’ hard work paid and I got 1910 at SAT. Regrettably, I did not realize my dream at last because of the limited financial resource of my family, an exogenous variable. Challengeable though, I got a high score in NCEE (top 5% in the Jiangsu Province) and could go to Northwest University, a reputable university in China.

At the Northwest, as an accounting major, I’ve learned various courses which revealed me the beauty of balance in accounting and established a solid foundation in accounting theory. The accounting practices in the community showed me the application of the accounting: I was in charge of accountancy in Eloquence League—a big community in Northwest, and once I have effectively cut down the unreasonably high budget of the program cooperating with EF Education, a renowned English-training institution. In addition, my internship in Johnson Controls Wuxi Co., Ltd. in 2009 has been considerably exposed me to the accounting practices, such as internal controls, and further confirmed me as a professional accountant: I love to deal with numbers, and whenever a final result produced by careful calculation and analysis I got a great fulfillment. Moreover, I realized that accountancy is now rather crucial to the modern enterprise management and could have significant influence upon the decision-making.

After gaining the master’s degree, I plan to pass the CPA exam and work at the financial department of a MNC in its Chinese branch. Applying for MBA is very likely the following step when I have more than five years experiences in the company. My long-term goal is to reach the position of CFO in the Chinese office of a renowned MNC when I’m in my forties. However, being a CFO is not my final goal of life. I’ve witnessed how the children in the poor countryside where my father used to work led a miserable life due to lack of education, as they dropped off school because of poverty impressed me a lot. Therefore, when I have the ability, I’d like to sponsor the schooling of children in China as much as I could, and perhaps run my own fund to help more children.

2.Enrolling and graduating a diverse student body is central to the University of Minnesota's mission. Please write a statement that identifies the distinctive qualities, characteristics, and life experiences you would contribute to your graduate program and to the education of fellow students at the University of Minnesota. You may wish to include examples that address your contribution to the diversity of the student body and illustrate your motivation to succeed by setting high standards for accomplishing intellectual and other goals, overcoming obstacles to achievement, and/or helping others to gain access to the resources necessary for success.
(please do not exceed one page in length unless your program has provided separate instructions)

I’m a person who is always willing to meet challenge and take the duty actively. When I was a freshman, I joined in Eloquence League, a big community in my university. My first important task was collecting students’ ideas about conducting English parties, lectures and training courses which were supposed to be financed by EF Education. However, the plan EL produced has been turned down by EF Education due to a high budget, and at that time, I surprisingly found that there was no certain person in charge of the accountancy of the community since ever. As an accounting major, I thought it was my responsibility to apply my advantages to the community. I analyzed the former budget and found several methods to cut off the cost, then, I tried to persuade other team members repeatedly since it was hard for a freshman to get attention of old members. Finally, my new plan has been recognized by the members and also been supported by the EF Education, and a Financial Department has also been established by me in the EL community then.

I also have great interest in art, esp. the architecture and music. I’m quite fascinated with the building in Europe, and I was very lucky to be the only one student of School of Economics and Management in our university to join in Chinese-Austrian EU Summer School which mainly supported by Eurasia-Pacific Uninet in summer holiday of 2007. During my travel in Europe, I collected the pictures of various styles of architecture from Louvre in Paris to St. Sophia Cathedral in Vienna. And at Vienna, Austrian, I enjoyed the wonderful sunshine under which the numerous masters such as Mozart, Beethovan and Schubert once lived. Their persistence for the dreams is what I admire most. I am quite gifted in playing piano as I have reached Level 8 at primary school in the national piano exam, which is quite unusual for kids at that age. My unique life experiences could also contribute to the community of Carlson School: I have been studying or living in several provinces of China, sometimes in countryside sometimes at city, because of the high mobility of my father’s job, and such a life experience made me understand more of the cultures and societies in different areas of modern China.
