An essay requires a thesis statement and could have your own opinion.
Research paper need straight facts based on your research like study or analysis in any academic papers, essays or journals and most of the points you include in a research paper are not your own opinion.
essay就是自己分析观点找证据的论文，要用到自己的观点，但是不能在正文中使用“I” 要客观。
research paper，就是通过研究调查很多学术文章，整理总结出的文章。
