The lengths of the rods. 这个不能imply长短一定不同：

The lengths of rods are the same.(我可以这么说)
也可以The lengths of the rods vary from 1m to 2m.

The length of the rods 更不能隐含（imply）短棍长度相同这个意思。
我认为这是有歧义的表达方法，多个rods, 一个length的话，理解为总长度更为恰当：
The total length of the rods.
或者说the length of each rod is 1m.
或者The rods have the same length of 1m.
我觉得这不是英语单复数的语法，是表达方式的好坏。The length of the rods 我不认为能涵盖更多的涵义，反而表达有了歧义。

length是不可数名词哦。没有复数形式的。
有些不可数名词当表示程度(一点;一些;某部分内容…)时, 常用a\an 修饰如:
a knowledge of English (懂点英语)
an understanding of law (懂点法律)
a history of 20 years
a time of 3 years
a population of 500 million
a length\distance of 50 meters

length作“一段,一节”解时,是单位词, length of可修饰名词,表示数量,如该名词是可数名词,变复数时length和该名词都要变;如该名词是不可数名词,变复数时只要变length即可。
不是表示长短不一，望采纳

没错。
作为以下意思时，是可数名词
（绳、布、木头等的）一段，一节，一截 A length of rope, cloth, wood, or other material is a piece of it that is intended to be used for a particular purpose or that exists in a particular situation.
a 30ft length of rope... 一根30英尺长的绳子
You can hang lengths of fabric behind the glass. 你可以在玻璃后面挂几条织品。
