At some point or another, every NBA team faces a rebuilding period. Ideally, teams try and acquire big names or draft key players who can contribute immediately in order to provide them the best opportunity to win a championship. However, when that plan fails, and the necessary veteran pieces either don’t come at all or just never mesh into a successful unit, then plan B must be enforced. Plan B is to scrap what’s been put together and start over. Rebuild. This often means drafting young players who may be 2-3 years away from contributing consistently, yet still hold the most potential. Plan B means going for the young free-agent stud, instead of the experienced, stable veteran presence, so that he can grow and prosper as the team does such. Entering the 1998-99 NBA campaign, the Rockets were still working with Plan A.
