一、population常与定冠词the连用,作主语用时,谓语动词常用第三人称单数形式。例如:

population在表示群体种类时用复数：
例句：In 5 of them, the rate at which fish are being taken out of the sea has dropped to a level that should let the populations recover.
此句中population是表示鱼的种类，所以必须要用复数。
其他情况下都是单数形式,但是跟在后面的谓语动词又有单复数之分：
1.表示意义较抽象的“人口”时，表单数意义；表示某地区的全体居民时，为集合名词，既可表示单数意义(视为整体)也可表示复数意义(考虑其个体)。如：
China’s population is by far the largest of any country.
中国是全世界人口最多的国家。
Most of the population has [have] fled.
大部分居民都逃走了。
Half the world’s population doesn’t [don’t] get enough to eat.
世界有一半人口没有足够的食物吃。

识字的人占人口总数的百分之几?
注：有的人认为，当population作主语时谓语动词一般用单数，但若前面有分数或百分数修饰时，谓语动词用复数——这是不准确的说法。
二、注意之处
若其后跟的是系表结构，且表语为复数，谓语动词要用复数。如：
One third of the population here are farmers.
这里三分之一的人口是工人。

很简单，看句子中的population强调的是人口数值，还是人口的组成成员，如果是前者，动词用单数；是后者，动词用复数。
over 70 percent of the population are healthy“人口中70%以上的人”，主语是“人”，而且是很多人，讲”人们怎么样”，而不是讲“人口”这个概念怎么样，如果讲人口这个概念，如人口数目是多少等等时，才用单数，如：What is the population of this city?
