如果改成He has been sleeping in the bedroom.就是现在完成进行时了，表示从过去某个时间一直持续到现在正在进行的动作且对现在产生影响。
He had gone to the city to buy a piece of furniture.
如果把 had gone 变成had been的话，就表示去了已经回来了。这因题而定。
